OSD – Add information to the Computer during OSD using a Custom Tattoo Step

When using an MDT (integrated in ConfigMgr or standalone) there is a step called Tattoo, this step will write information to the registry as well as to the WMI repository.

Let us see what it looks by default:

Cool, but I need my own stuff?

We have done this for various  reasons and many customers, it could be used for making sure the computer ends up in certain ConfigMgr Collections, or that applications behave in a certain way, or that the asset management tools does the job differently, or that the correct support team can know what the computer was configured for, or what task sequence that was used, or…. As you see the are some valid reasons for this, no doubt.

The question is of course, should you modify the existing ZTITatto.wsf and corresponding .MOF file?, No, you should not do that, instead you should create new files and use them instead.

To make the work in a task sequence you need to add the files to you Scripts folder, update the CustomSettings.ini if you are using Custom Properties and add a step in the Task Sequence.

I have added 4 new properties, added them to a MacAddress, so first step is to verify that the ZTIGather process reads this correct, let us verify this by running:

At LabCenter

The Customer LabCenter deploys computer for hands-on labs and they wanted each computer to be tattooed with information regarding the LAB and one thing they use it for is to be able to display the information directly in the screen using BGinfo, but they also use it for other purposes. BGInfo reads the Registry values, or WMI

OSD – BIOS upgrade during OS Deployment in MDT/ConfigMgr (v3)

This is the third version of the script solution; it is very simple. You detect make/model in any way you would like to, create a rule based on BIOS version, if the rule match, nothing happens, otherwise it runs any command you want. That said, you could use this for other task as well. Most common question is “does it work with any Make/Model”`No, there are some vendors that does not provide the ability to run a BIOS upgrade silently without reboot without control, that is, the darn thing reboots immediately and that usually breaks the Task Sequence. I have one thing for those vendors to say “Shame on you!”

Detect the Model

The detection in the script is actually whatever you want, it is just a “If-then”  here are two sample lines detection that you will find in the script

Use the detection method for each model you like, very simple

Detect the BIOS version

This is also not that hard, here are 2 sample lines from the script

The Silent Command

You also need to figure out the command, not really hard, download the bios upgrade, read how to run it from a command line, update the script and you are done, here is a sample of one of those sections.

Run the script

in MDT you can import the folder with the script as a application and set this as the command line:

PowerShell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File Install-BIOSUpgrade.ps1

In ConfigMgr you can import this as a Package and then run the command line the same way

It is also possible to run this outside of a task sequence if you like, it works as a stand alone script, however, you cannot use the integration with MDT of course.

If you want it is possible to add a custom property in customsettings.ini, something like “NeedReboot”, then you can add the following to happen if the BIOS has been upgraded

OSD – How make PXE work in ConfigMgr OSD, MDT and WDS work perfectly fine – Stop using DHCP Option 66 & 67

During the OSD class last week I did get some questions regarding the use of IP Helpers in the routers or using Option 66 and 67 in the DHCP server, since booth methods seems to be working.

That is kind of true, but in reality not…

The design for PXE is based on IP Helpers. That means that the client should broadcast and say:

– “Hi, I need some IP stuff and I need something to boot on”

How is it supposed to work?

Now, if the router is configured for IP helpers (it already have one that points to the DHCP server, so the only configuration you need to do is “add one more”) the broadcast will be picked up by the router, encapsulated and sent to both the DHCP server as well as the PXE (Windows Deployment Server). The DHCP server will grab a free IP and subnet, gateway addresses that fits the network the client is located on, send it to the router and tell the router to send the packet to the client. The PXE server will “after knowing what kind of computer it is (BIOS / UEFI / x86 / x64) pick the correct boot file and send that information to the router and tell it to send the packet to the client.

This means that the client will receive two different packages and the client will merge them into one, consume the packet and we are done.

What happens when Option 66 & 67 is involved?

Now, let us assume that we don’t have the IP address to the PXE server configured in the IP Helper but instead we have option 66 & 67 configured, well the first part is the same, but the DHCP server will also forward the option 66 & 67 to client, it should work, right?

Sometimes it does, but since the PXE client could not present itself it might or might not get the correct boot file, it basically means that you can either boot on BIOS machines OR you can boot on UEFI machines and the client will not receive two packages (which client expects) so, sometimes it does not handle that correct (depending on firmware, Network Adapter, Vendor and such. It would be possible to create DHCP filters, multiple scopes and such to make UEFI based machines boot on one range of IP’s and otter IP’s for other filters, but that is just pure pain to manage

The number ONE issue we work with at customer sites when it comes to PXE boot is the bloody Option 66 & 67.

So, the short story is very, very simple, just configure the darn routers correctly and have a happy life.

OSD Deployment – Deploying Intel NUC and getting drivers and settings assigned using the AliasUserExit.vbs – Converting Product into %ModelAlias%

I have been deploying the small and cool Intel NUC’s for a long time, they just have one problem, it is a small problem, but….

There is no Make/Model, actually, the entire SMBBios is empty, now that makes it a bit hard to figure what model we are deploying and therefore it is hard to determine what drivers that needs to be deployed. On some older  NUC’s there could be settings.

This is what we get from PowerShell – Win32_ComputerSystem,Win32_ComputerSystemProduct,Win32_BIOS and Win32_BaseBoard

As you can see Make and Model are kind of “nothing”, but SMBIOSBIOSVersion is RYBDWi35.86A.0350.2015.0812.1722 and that is basically the name of the motherboard, but slightly better, why don’t we use the Win32_BaseBoard and grab product, that seems just to be the perfect match here. And hold it… Win32_BaseBoard is already inventoried by the ZTIGather process, so the only thing we need to do is to set ModelAlias to Product, that seems pretty easy…

The “old” AliasUserExit to the rescue (once more)

The AliasUserExit script runs as a part of the ZTIGather process in MDT/ConfigMgr. This script has a section for Models where either Make is “Intel” or “”, in that case we grab the Product from the gather process and store that in %ModelAlias%.

Verify that it works:

Note: In this case someone manually added/modified the SMBios using the Intel Toolkit to say that the Model is DN2820FYKH, but it is actually DN2820FYK

Back to Basic – CustomSettings.ini – Converting Desktop and Laptop computer types into Roles

So, someone asked me(you know who you are) if it is possible to convert something like a computer types into a role, and yes that is possible and some times a pretty smart thing to do. If you have basically to kind of roles in your org and they are based on the fact that the computer is a Laptop (like a field engineer) or a Desktop (like a standard office user), well then it should work.

Converting Computer types into Roles:

In the Priorityline we have ByDesktop,ByLaptop,Role and Default

We use [ByDesktop] to return a value of yes/no and we store that in IsDesktop-Yes if it is a desktop and then we send it to a section with the name of IsDesktop-Yes. In the section [IsDesktop-True] we assign it the Property Role001 to ComputerIsDesktop. Now we can create a role in customsettings.ini, or we could create a Role in the MDTdatabase if you would like that instead and then assign all settings to that. In this case we will create a Role section called [ComputerIsDesktop] and in that role we will define all settings for that role, in this case it will be an application and then we repeat that story for a laptop.

Back to Basic – CustomSettings.ini – Converting Model and ModelAlias into Roles

So, someone asked me(you know who you are) if it is possible to convert something like a computer model into a role, and yes that is possible and some times a pretty smart thing to do. It becomes really great if you are using the ModelAlias Userexit script and you would like to use the database to define settings. The database has support for make and model, but since you are using modelalias instead of make and model, well then you can define settings as a role instead. The only thing you need to do is to convert the ModelAlias value into a Role and you are done. In this post I will describe two scenarios, one when you convert model into a role and the other is when you turn the modelalias into a role.

Converting Model into a Role:

In the customsettings.ini file we have three sections in the priority line: ConvertModelToRole,Role,Default and one customproperty just for fun

  1. ConvertModelToRole – will set the Role001 into RoMo-“the return of the model”
  2. Role – will search for a section with the name of RoMo-“the return of the model”
  3. Default – set default values

Nice to Know – Yes, it is possible to copy items between to Task Sequences as well as copy items between 2 different deployment shares

This is NOT a new feature, I cant even remember how long this has been working, but this morning I saw a Tweet when someone was happy about the possibility to copy items between deployment shares in MDT, so for thoose that knows all this, you do not need to read more, for the rest of you.

Yes, you can copy items between Task Sequences

(it also works copy items within a Task Sequence)

This works in both MDT as well as in ConfigMgr.

Yes, you can copy items between Deployment Shares (Only for MDT, Lite Touch)

In this case I have 3 deployment shares in the Deployment Workbench and it is possible to copy all kind of items between these 3 deployment shares

Let us copy some application from one deployment share to another.

Select Application, right click and select Copy.

Browse to new location, right-click, select Paste.

The application has been copied to the new deployment share.

OSD – Using PowerShell Commands in UserExit VB script to extend the ZTIGather process during OSD

During todays session I realized that I have done a lot of OSD stuff, but never published it (shame on me), so time to work. First up is how to run PowerShell CommandLets inside a UserExit script. A UserExit script is an extension to the ZTIGather process, giving you the opportunity to extend the gather process with information that the Gather process does not cover. That has been possible for a long time, but VBscript is not really the easiest script language in the world, so I asked my self if it would be possible to use PowerShell inside the VBscript and of course it is!

The idea

The basic idea is to run the UserExit script from customsettings.ini as usual and then do a jump out into PowerShell, execute the PowerShell CMDLets, terminate and return the value into the VBscript, which then will be a value connected to a Custom Property in the gather process, which then can be consumed by customsettings.ini and/or the task sequence. you can download everything from here: http://1drv.ms/1u41Yj2

The boot image must have support for PowerShell and you can get that by adding .NET and PowerShell

The Customsettings.ini file

The customsettings.ini file will direct ZTIGather to process the section called UserExits, which will execute the UserExit.vbs script, call the function called RunningPSCommand and return the value from that function into the property called PSCommand.

The UserExit Script that runs PowerShell commands

The script is rather simple, basically the PowerShell command is a string, executed by PowerShell.exe and using Executor.StdIn.Close to close the window and then using Executor.StdOut.ReadAll to grab whatever you have in the window and put that in the RunningPSCommand, which then is returned back to the ZTIGather process as a value for the Property RunningPSCommand.

As you can see the PowerShell command was running and returned the value “Virtual Machine” and now the Property PSCommand is equal to Virtual Machine and can be used elsewhere in CustomSettings.ini or in the Task Sequence
